Mystery of Missing Masterpiece
This week we heard of another Art mystery. The Mystery of Missing Masterpiece, Botticelli, Madonna and Child (1485) – a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. Sandro Botticelli
During his lifetime, Botticelli painted secular and mythological artworks, often with religious themes. Botticelli was a master of perspective and foreshortening, leading him to be commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV to create frescoes for the Sistine Chapel. Many of his artworks are recognised as masterpieces such as The Birth of Venus and Spring currently residents at the Uffizi Gallery in Italy.
Madonna and Child
Most of Botticelli’s secular work is lost, so it is no surprise that another one of his infamous artworks has mysteriously disappeared. Reportedly valued at $10m, Madonna and Child was last seen in 2007 at the New York gallery of Lawrence Salander. Salander was jailed in 2010 and declared bankruptcy. New Ownership
The painting was ruled to be returned to the children of John Dick, owner of Kraken Investments, but the beneficial owners of the company are none the wiser of its location, or even if it still exists. Due to an investigation conducted by the European Investigative Collaborations (EIC) leaked documents reveal that Kraken took ownership of the painting to cover outstanding loans, however it has been suggested that the documents were fraudulent in order to hide the theft of cash and other assets from trusts.
