04 October 2012 to 06 January 2013 – at the undació Mapfre’s Sala Recoletos in Madrid.
Madrid offers the chance to see the unique and immaculate craftsmanship of Jean Paul Gaultier, notorious fashion guru. The show is curated by Nathalie Bondil from the MMFA Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in conjunction with the Jean Paul Gaultier Maison and the Mapfre Foundation. It is a spectacular event catered for all types of art lovers. The event is the first international retrospective, with the artist making his debut in Europe after a recent success in North America. His clothes are a delight to view, however it has to be said, they are slightly overshadowed by the masterful mannequins on display. Animated and speaking, the fabulous dummies take the exhibition to another level, making it interesting and entertaining to anybody, regardless of their interest in fashion and art.
The exhibition includes haute couture, audiovisual pieces, videos and excerpts from fashion shows and interviews, as well as the first designs and pictures by major photographers. We are taken on a historic journey of his artwork which are testimony to his bold, cutting-edge designs, but also the virtuosity and craftsmanship of his creations, which have influenced the work of artists such as Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Richard Avedon, Mario Testino and Pierre & Gilles, among others. His artwork features all of most iconic pieces including the Madonna body corsets from her 1990 Blond Ambition tour, cod pieces, and landmark designs from his haute couture collections.
